The end of the left still seems a very long way away

Remember when when the Berlin Wall fell, and then the USSR? Many right-wingers, and many non-political people, said this is the end of the left.

Others, however, warned that leftists don’t stop being leftists, and plotting and agitating against freedom, just because they’re not currently in power or vogue, and that we were not rid of them at all.

I think we can safely say that those people were right.

Another good point these wise men made was that without the bogeymen of the USSR, East Germany, etc. hanging over them, leftists might be able to gradually acquire respectability. That’s also happened.

Update: I saw a comment a while back on a blog, possibly Tim Newman’s, that’s been haunting me for a while. It was along the lines of, “I sometimes wonder whether the real reason the Iron Curtain came down is because there was no longer any great difference between one side of it and the other.”

  1. One of the last posts I did at the late lamented Counting Cats was about the KGB defector Anatoliy Golitsyn and his “revelation” of the Sino-Soviet “long-term strategy”, under which the famed Split was a blind, and the simultaneous liberalization of China’s economy and the winding down of the Soviet empire were part of a deliberate plan to rehabilitate Communism in the eyes of the West.

I said then that I don’t know what to make of him. Senior intelligence figures called him a fantasist and a conspiracy theorist. However, it can’t be denied that in the second decade of the 21st Century, whether he made them up out of whole cloth or not, his theories sound uncomfortably close to home.

  2. THe wall fell because they USSR was bankrupt, but it also made it easier to inflitrate and undermind the west from within (e.g Merkel)

  3. Blaming the lack of product differentiation, so to speak, for the failure of one product in relation to it’s competition is self-evidently false.

The West is slowly dying because the Westerners are too wealthy and unserious to care.
