Remember when when the Berlin Wall fell, and then the USSR? Many right-wingers, and many non-political people, said this is the end of the left.
Others, however, warned that leftists don’t stop being leftists, and plotting and agitating against freedom, just because they’re not currently in power or vogue, and that we were not rid of them at all.
I think we can safely say that those people were right.
Another good point these wise men made was that without the bogeymen of the USSR, East Germany, etc. hanging over them, leftists might be able to gradually acquire respectability. That’s also happened.
Update: I saw a comment a while back on a blog, possibly Tim Newman’s, that’s been haunting me for a while. It was along the lines of, “I sometimes wonder whether the real reason the Iron Curtain came down is because there was no longer any great difference between one side of it and the other.”
