The Tiananmen massacre

Communists are great people, aren’t they? Here’s a declassified cable from a British diplomat describing what happened (at least according to his sources) in Tiananmen Square in 1989:

5. FACT. ON ARRIVAL AT TIANANMEN TROOPS FROM SMR [Shenyang Military Region] HAD SEPARATED STUDENTS AND RESIDENTS. STUDENTS UNDERSTOOD THEY WERE GIVEN ONE HOUR TO LEAVE SQUARE BUT AFTER FIVE MINUTES APCS [armoured personnel carriers] ATTACKED. STUDENTS LINKED ARMS BUT WERE MOWN DOWN INCLUDING SOLDIERS. APCS THEN RAN OVER BODIES TIME AND TIME AGAIN TO MAKE QUOTE PIE UNQUOTE AND REMAINS COLLECTED BY BULLDOZER. REMAINS INCINERATED AND THEN HOSED DOWN DRAINS.

  1. And just eight years later, HMG handed the people of Hong Kong over to the bastards who’d ordered this.

They still don’t acknowledge that it ever happened. The BBC currently has a piece about “the picture China forgot” – the “tank man” – but it wasn’t “forgotten”; it was suppressed. Because they know that, over time, it’ll start to be thought of like the Armenian genocide, or the Ukranian famine: a historical event that people who can’t let go of the distant past use to beat a country over the head with.

But that wire shows the true horror.

  2. In defence of BIG there wasn’t much they could have done by that point to prevent the handover, but it it’s a nice ‘what if’ scenario where the UK kept HK.
