The Harvey Weinstein verdict is being spun as a victory for #MeToo, but really, nobody involved comes out of it well.
Harvey Weinstein found guilty in landmark #MeToo moment
There is no doubt that Weinstein’s behaviour was disgusting and immoral. He was aggressively trying to shag every woman who came near him looking for a part, threatened to ruin the careers of anyone who didn’t, he did ruin the careers of several actresses who didn’t play ball (or should that be didn’t play with his balls), and he generally acted like a sociopath, which he probably is. He’s a sleazy creep who deserves his fall from grace.
But is this a victory for #MeToo? Sort of, but also not. Yes, in that it turns out that the casting couch is not just alive and well in the modern era, but it’s getting pounded harder than ever, and that knowledge needed to come out.
But then pretty much all the claims about rape have turned out not to be true. Only a few made it to court, and of those only a couple returned guilty verdicts, and they were both pretty dodgy.
What has been revealed in spectacular fashion, although this is not something the Guardian will dwell on, is that most actresses went along with Harvey’s casting couch method, and that pretty much everyone in Hollywood knew about it, and they all chose to say nothing. Worse than that, they all sucked up to him (as did half the Democrat establishment), preferring to do that instead of driving him out of the business.
This is the American movie business which has been, for the last few decades, rabidly Democrat, and full of lofty talk about how the new Hollywood is so moral and caring and not at all like the old Hollywood with its nasty profit-driven cigar-chomping Republican moguls and their casting couches. But, whoops, it turns out that the new Hollywood, run by virtue-signalling Democrats, is just as bad as the old one. Turns out that all these actors and directors and scriptwriters, who have been trying to convince you how bad everyone else is compared to them, were bad guys all along. Except that they’re going to spin it so that they’re still the good guys. In fact, they’re even better guys and gals than we thought, because now our industry is cleaner than ever, because that Miramax guy – what’s his name again? I never really knew him, you know – has gone.
I look forward to the next Hollywood scandal which everyone in Hollywood knew about. Probably going to be paedophilia. A lot of people outside Hollywood know about that too, but Hollywood is pretending that everything is normal.
