Ancient history

As we know, many people have their political opinions frozen in time when they’re young, and it’s almost impossible to change them. A case in point is Tom Harris:

How on earth did we get to a point where the fight for freedom of expression is one that is owned entirely by the Right-wing of the UK’s political spectrum?

Throughout my life and my 34 years as a Labour Party member, it was Labour, not the Conservatives, who stood for the right to say and write whatever you wanted.

34 years ago is about the last ever time the Labour Party ever stood up for free speech. No amount of counter-evidence seems to have permeated through Tom Harris’s skull since that time.

In other news:

Academics are accusing a Tory MP and government whip of “McCarthyite” behaviour, after he wrote to all universities asking them to declare what they are teaching their students about Brexit and to provide a list of teachers’ names.

ie. Universities are upset because they think the government is going to start doing what they do: censoring opinion.

  1. It is certainly strange that the Usual Suspects still invoke “McCarthyite” as if it were a Bad Thing.

Senator McCarthy was vociferous in his concern that the post-WWII US government was infested with Communists, fellow travelers, and Soviet agents. For this, all the best people derided him at the time. But later slow release of information, such as the Venona files, has revealed that — By Golly! — McCarthy was right to be concerned.

In the interests of historical accuracy, “McCarthyite” should be a term of respect, used to designate persons who promote assessments which are unpopular at the time but will later be proved to be substantially correct. McCarthyites! Ahead of our time!

In which category one can (sadly) put Nick Griffin………and one suspects anyone who does not fall for the ‘Global Warming/Climate Change’ malarkey.
